Limitations of the data and conditions of use
Please check all of the following boxes to indicate that you have read about the limitations of the IPUMS data and
you agree to abide by the conditions of use.
No fees may be charged for use or distribution of the data
All persons are granted a limited license to use and distribute these data, but you may not charge a fee for
the data if you distribute it to others.
Cite the IPUMS appropriately
Publications and research reports based on the database must cite it appropriately. For information on proper
citation refer to the page Citation and use.
Let us know about any work you do using the IPUMS
Any publications, research reports, presentations, or educational material making use of the data or documentation should be added to our Bibliography.
Continued funding for the IPUMS depends on our ability to show our sponsor agencies that researchers are using the data for productive purposes.
The IPUMS was not designed for genealogical research
The IPUMS database is not well suited to genealogical research. The IPUMS Data Extraction System is limited
in that you cannot search for names. For more information on using the IPUMS for genealogical research see our note to genealogists.
It is difficult to use the IPUMS to study small geographic areas
In the IPUMS census samples for years 1940-2005, no places having a population of fewer than 100,000 persons can be identified. In the census samples from earlier years, small places are identified, but most of these datasets are 1% samples and thus do not have enough cases to reliably analyze small areas.
This system provides individual-level data only
The IPUMS Data Extraction System will not produce tables. You will need to use a statistical software package,
such as SPSS, SAS, or Stata, in order to analyze the data.
Please notify ipums@pop.umn.edu regarding errors in the data or documentation.
Use it for GOOD -- never for EVIL
