Comparability
This variable means the same thing in all years, but it is available only for persons under age 1 in 1870, 1880, and 1950, and for all persons in 1900. The frequency of cases for June and July is markedly understated in the 1870 and 1880 samples. In these years, enumeration began on June 1, and the age of persons born close to that date was frequently rounded up to 1 year.
BIRTHMO can be used to create information for 1950 similar to that yielded for 1850-1940 in AGEMONTH (Age in months).
