Description

SPLITHID provides the original household serial number in the 100% datasets.

As a part of IPUMS data processing, group quarters units containing more than 60 people were split into 1-person households, each with their own unique value in the IPUMS SERIAL variable. For this reason, the SERIAL variable makes it impossible to identify any group of people who share a group quarters unit containing more than 60 people.

Researchers needing to analyze intact group quarters units containing more than 60 people (such as the residents of a large prison or poorhouse) should use SPLITHID instead of SERIAL. SPLITHID assigns a common serial number to all residents of each housing unit and group quarters, regardless of size.

The (flag) variable SPLIT can be used to identify all records that were split into a 1-person household.

User Note: Original serial numbers in the Census full count files were generated at the State level. Researchers will need to use STATEFIP/STATEICP and SPLITHID to uniquely identify split group quarters.

SPLITHID is an 8-digit numeric variable that provides the original household serial number in the 100% datasets.
