Note 5:

Before 1960, census enumeration instructions specified the sequence in which various relatives and nonrelatives should be listed on the census form. Since the introduction of self-enumeration in 1960, the instructions have become less explicit; nevertheless, respondents still have a strong tendency to list children immediately following their parents and to list married couples adjacently.
