IMPSP
Imputed location of spouse

Description

IMPSP reports the person number (PERNUM) within the household of the person's probable spouse. The variable serves the same function as SPLOC, but uses IMPREL (Imputed relationship) instead of RELATE (Relationship) to determine the person number (PERNUM) of the person's probable spouse (if one was found within the same household). For 1850-1870, IMPSP is the only IPUMS variable for linking spouses to each other. IMPSP is constructed in identical fashion for 1880 as well, so users can be certain that different linking methods do not affect their results. In addition to its separate column location here (P265-266), for 1850-1870, IMPSP appears in the same columns that contain SPLOC for other years (P34-35).

See "Family Interrelationships" for more information on IPUMS constructed variables.

Codes

IMPSP is a constructed 2-digit numeric variable that indicates the person number (PERNUM) within the household of the person's probable spouse. The variable serves the same function as SPLOC, but uses IMPREL (Imputed relationship) instead of RELATE (Relationship) to determine the person number (PERNUM) of the person's probable spouse (if one was found within the same household). See "Family Interrelationships" for more information on IPUMS constructed variables. IMPSP specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).

User Note: For 1850-1870, IMPSP is the only IPUMS variable for linking spouses to each other. IMPSP is constructed in identical fashion for 1880 as well, so users can be certain that different linking methods do not affect their results. In addition to its separate column location here (P265-266), for 1850-1870, IMPSP appears in the same columns that contain SPLOC for other years (P34-35).

IMPSP Specific Variable Codes
00 = No spouse of this person present in household.

Comparability

The variable is comparable across years. IMPSP is also substantively comparable to SPLOC. Users can compare spouse links made with IMPREL to those made with RELATE for 1880 -- a year for which both IMPSP and SPLOC are available.

Universe

  • 1850-1880: All persons.
  • 1900-1910: Not available in Alaska, Hawaii, or the oversamples of American Indians, African-Americans, and Hispanics (samples 2-4 in SAMP1900; samples 2-4, 6, and 7 in SAMP1910); not available in the 1900 2.5% sample; not available for Puerto Rico.
