SPLIT40
Large group quarters that was split up, 1940 100%

Description

SPLIT40 identifies residents of group quarters containing more than 60 people in the 1940 100% dataset.

As a part of IPUMS data processing, group quarters units containing more than 60 people were split into 1-person households, each with their own unique value in the IPUMS SERIAL variable. For this reason, the SERIAL variable makes it impossible to identify any group of people who share a group quarters unit containing more than 60 people.

Researchers needing to analyze intact group quarters units containing more than 60 people (such as the residents of a large prison or poorhouse) should use SERIAL40, instead of SERIAL.

SERIAL40 assigns a common serial number to all residents of each group quarters and housing unit, regardless of size.
