Description

DATANUM identifies the particular sample from which the case is drawn in the particular census year. There are two samples in 1850 and three samples in 1860. A combination of YEAR, DATANUM, and SERIAL provides a unique identifier for every slave holding in the Slave samples; YEAR, DATANUM, SERIAL, and PERNUM uniquely identify every individual in the database.
