Description
STATEFIP identifies the household's state of enumeration using the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) coding scheme, which orders the states alphabetically. With one exception, state or territory names represent that state or territory's contemporary political boundaries in 1850 and 1860. Users should familiarize themselves with any historical changes in these boundaries that might affect their research. The exception is the state Virginia. Following IPUMS convention, we identify the Virginia counties that subsequently became part of West Virginia as West Virginia.
