1990 Labor Market Area Codes and Commuting Zones
(Back to Geographic tools)
The tables below show the detailed county composition of each laborMarket Area (LMA), as well as showing commuting zones within the LMA. The LMA/CZ five digit number lists the LMA as the first three digits and the commuting zone as the last two digits. A hierarchical cluster analysis groups counties into commuting zones based on journey-to-work county commuting flows (see C. Tolbert and M. Sizer, U.S. Commuting Zones and Labor Market Areas for additional information on the statistical techniques used to construct LMAs). Commuting zones are aggregated into larger LMAs based on a total population size of 100,000 persons or larger to meet the minimum threshold of the Census Bureau's confidentiality criteria. For users who want to analyze these tables in a statistics package, LMA and commuting zone composition information is available as one downloadable ASCII file.
