How to Help

Incompletely Identified Metropolitan Areas: 1980-2006

Go Back to the Geographic Tools page

Many metropolitan areas are only partially identified in the 1980-2000 Census and 2005 and 2006 ACS/PRCS samples. For areas followed by a percentage figure below, a portion of the metropolitan could not be identified, given the available geographic information. People who lived in the non-identified parts of metropolitan areas were coded as "not identifiable" in the METAREA variable. For this reason, population estimates of these metropolitan areas generated using the IPUMS samples will be low by approximately the proportions indicated in the table below. Users should not assume that the identifiable portion of a metropolitan area is a random subset of the entire metropolitan area. The specific parts of each metropolitan area that were uncodable can be determined by consulting the PUMA, Super-PUMA, and County Group contents files on the "Geographic Tools" page. The User Caution note at the bottom of the METAREA variable description explains this issue in more detail.

The lowest level of geography in the 2005 and 2006 ACS/PRCS was the PUMA, which had the exact same boundaries as the 2000 PUMA Census data. The Census Bureau has not released information associating these PUMA boundaries with 2005 and 2006 metropolitan area definitions. For this reason, the 2005 and 2006 ACS/PRCS versions of METAREA present classifications based on metropolitan boundaries from 2000. The 2005 and 2006 METAREA variable is thus consistent with 2000 metropolitan area definitions. Because of this, the Composition of Metropolitan areas for the 2005 and 2006 ACS/PRCS correspond to the 2000 composition. Users should note that the incompletely identified metropolitan areas for the 2005 and 2006 ACS/PRCS correspond to the incompletely identified areas for the 2000 5% sample.
