Incompletely Identified Metropolitan Areas: 1980-present
Go Back to the Geographic Tools page
Many metropolitan areas are only partially identified in the 1980-2000 census samples and in the ACS and PRCS. For areas followed by a percentage figure below, a portion of the metropolitan area could not be identified, given the geographic information available in that year's PUMS files. People who lived in the non-identified parts of metropolitan areas were coded as "not identifiable" in the METAREA and METRO variables. For this reason, population estimates of these metropolitan areas generated using the IPUMS samples will be low by approximately the proportions indicated in the table below.
Users should not assume that the identifiable portion of a metropolitan area is a random subset of the entire metropolitan area. The specific parts of each metropolitan area that were uncodable can be determined by consulting the PUMA, Super-PUMA, and County Group contents files on the "Geographic Tools" page. The User Caution note at the bottom of the METAREA variable description explains this issue in more detail.
The lowest level of geography in the ACS and PRCS is the PUMA, which has the exact same boundaries as the PUMAs identified in the 2000 5% census sample. Some metropolitan area definitions have changed since 2000, but the Census Bureau has not associated ACS/PRCS PUMAs with more recent metropolitan area definitions. For this reason, the versions of METAREA in the ACS/PRCS are based on metropolitan boundaries from 2000.
