Description

BASEMENT classifies housing units by foundation type. The 1960 form provided three options: "with a basement," "on a concrete slab," or "in another way." The 1970 form had the same three choices but defined the terms. Specifically, "A house has a basement if there is an enclosed space in which persons can walk upright under all or part of the building;" "A house on a concrete slab has no basement or air or crawl space beneath it;" "A house built in another way is one directly on the ground or resting on a foundation or posts to provide crawl space." The 1970 form also specified that mobile homes and trailers should be reported under "built in another way."

In 1960, not all households received this question, and only 80 percent of cases in the IPUMS include the question. Such cases accurately represent proportional distributions but not correct absolute numbers for the total population. Comparability

This variable is comparable across years, but the answers in 1970 may be more accurate, due to the more detailed directions noted above.
