Description

CONMARST indicates whether a married respondent is consensually married or not. Consensual marriage refers to a marital union that is not prescribed by a legal, civil contract. Users should also consult the variable MARST, which indicates marital status. Consensual unions are captured in the variable MARST under code "1," "Married, spouse present."

Comparability

This variable is available for the 1910-1920 and 1970-1990 Puerto Rican samples. The comparability of this sample is limited by universe changes across years. The universe for the 1910 and 1920 samples includes all married persons, including separated, age 12 and over. In 1970 the universe includes all married respondents, excluding separated, age 14 and over. In 1980 and 1990 the universe includes all married respondents, excluding separated, age 15 and over. It is also limited by comparability of the status, married, in the variable MARST across samples (code "1" only in MARST for the 1910-1920 samples), (codes "1" or "2" in MARST for the 1970-1990 samples) who are consensually married.
