Comparability

The universe is quite different for 1900 and 1910 than for 1950. In the early years, the question was "number of years married" and was asked only of currently-married persons (i.e., if a person was now married, how long had he or she been married?). Note that for the 1910 Puerto Rican census currently married persons included cohabiting couples under consensual union. In the 1950 1% sample, the question on marital status duration was relevant to all sample-line persons who had ever been married, even if they were not now married (i.e., whatever their current marital status -- married, widowed, divorced, separated -- how many years had they been in that condition?). In the 1950 100% full count file, the question on marital status duration was relevant to 1-in-6 sample-line persons who had ever been married. Occasionally members of a married couple report different durations of their current marital status. IPUMS retains this original detail. In these cases, we suspect that one member of the married couple was married more than once and was reporting the entire duration of their current marital status.
