Metropolitan area, 2003 ACS

Description

The 2003 ACS PUMS contained a metropolitan status variable that combined information about both Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) and Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas (CMSAs). Since the 2003 ACS did not sample every county in the country, many of the MSAs and CMSAs identified in the 2003 data lack cases from one or more of their component counties. MET2003 reports metropolitan locations for all fully and partially identified MSAs and CMSAs. The Codes and Frequencies table (under the above Codes tab) lists all of the component counties of each MSA and CMSA and specifies which counties are included in the data.

While this variable was not fully documented in the original Census Bureau documentation, we have checked population data to confirm that the metropolitan designations in MET2003 are accurate, representing the 1999 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) deliniations. Still, users should be aware that the variable was fully constructed by the IPUMS staff and should thus be used with caution.

Codes

This variable is not available for any of the currently selected samples.

Comparability

MET2003 is available only for the 2003 ACS. METAREA, a conceptually similar variable, is available for decennial census samples and for all ACS samples through 2011. The 2003 data in METAREA identifies only those MSAs that were completely identifiable in the 2003 ACS.
