PERSPROP reports the contemporary dollar value of all stocks, bonds, mortgages, notes, livestock, plate, jewels, and furniture owned by the respondent.

PERSPROP is a 6-digit numeric code reporting the contemporary dollar value of all stocks, bonds, mortgages, notes, livestock, plate, jewels, and furniture owned by the respondent. PERSPROP specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).

000000 = Blank, or reported value of zero.
999997 = Topcode.
999998 = Unknown.

Comparability

The market value of slaves was also included in 1860. The instructions for 1870 excluded the value of clothing and cases where the total value of personal property was less than $100; these exceptions were not included in the instructions for 1860.

REALPROP and PERSPROP are the only wealth - as opposed to income - variables in the IPUMS.
