Description
URBPOP gives the population, in hundreds, of places considered "urban" according to the Census Bureau's 1930-1940 definition. All incorporated municipalities with a population of 2,500 or more were defined as urban, but this definition of urban also included some places that were not incorporated municipalities (See URBAN for a discussion of how the Census Bureau's definition changed over time).
URBPOP is a 5-digit numeric variable that reports the population, in hundreds, for places considered "urban" according to the Census Bureau's 1930-1940 definition. For instance, an "urban" place having a population of 1,234,500 will have a URBPOP value of 12345. All incorporated municipalities with a population of 2,500 or more were defined as urban, but this definition of urban also included some places that were not incorporated municipalities (See URBAN for a discussion of how the Census Bureau's definition changed over time). URBPOP specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
