Description

VET95X00 indicates whether persons were engaged in active-duty military service in the armed forces of the United States after April 1995. It includes those on active duty in the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard during this period, and it excludes those in the National Guard and military Reserves, unless they were called to active duty.

For the 2000 U.S. and Puerto Rican census samples, the reference period for service is any time between April 1995 and the completion of the 2000 census form. (The official census date was April 1, 2000, but respondents may have completed the form-and answered the question about military service during "April 1995 or later"-several weeks after that.) For ACS respondents, the closing date for "later" depended on when they participated in the survey, which was conducted throughout 2000 (for the 2000 ACS), 2001 (for the 2001 ACS), and 2002 (for the 2002 ACS).

Comparability

This variable is only available for the 2000 census and the 2000-2002 ACS. The 2003-2004 ACS merges this variable and VET90X95 into one variable (VET90X01).

The 2000 census and the ACS defined persons currently in the armed forces as veterans. So, too, did the 1990 census, but earlier censuses did not.
