Description
CARPOOL indicates whether the respondent usually rode to work in a carpool (with at least one other worker) during the previous week. Persons are considered car-poolers only if they rode with other workers (see RIDERS).
Codes and Frequencies
Comparability
The 1990-2000 samples, the ACS and the PRCS contain information about whether the respondent drove alone or carpooled. The 1980 census collected additional information about carpooling, specifying whether the person shared driving, drove others only, or was a passenger only. These three categories must be combined into a single carpooling category for comparability with later years. For 1970, carpool passengers (but not drivers) are identified in TRANWORK.
For the 1980-2000 censuses, the ACS and the PRCS, RIDERS reports how many other workers usually rode to work with the respondent. Users should note that RIDERS is available for the 1990 Puerto Rican sample even though CARPOOL is not available for that sample.

- 1990: Persons age 16+ who worked last week and used a private auto, truck, or van as their primary means of transportation to work (see TRANWORK); not available for Puerto Rico.
- 2000: Persons age 16+ who worked last week and used a private auto, truck, or van as their primary means of transportation to work (see TRANWORK).
- ACS/PRCS 2000-2005: Persons age 15+ who worked last week and used a private auto, truck, or van as their primary means of transportation to work (see TRANWORK).
- ACS/PRCS 2006-onward: Persons age 16+ who worked last week and used a private auto, truck, or van as their primary means of transportation to work (see TRANWORK).
