Description

TRANWORK reports the respondent's primary means of transportation to work on the most recent day worked (1970), or over the course of the previous week (the 1960 and 1980-2000 censuses, the ACS, and the PRCS). The primary means of transportation was that used on the most days or to cover the greatest distance.

Comparability

The first digit is fairly comparable across years, with some exceptions: Persons who did not report are included in the N/A category in 1960 and allocated in other years; those who rode motorcycles and bicycles were identified separately in the 1980-2000 censuses, the ACS and the PRCS but would probably have responded "other" in 1960 and 1970; those who took a ferry boat were first identified in 1990. The second digit preserves more detailed information available only in some years.

In addition, please note that alternative labels were used in the Puerto Rico community surveys in select samples. Specifically, "launch" was used as the label for "ferryboat" in the 1980 PRCS sample. "Público" was used as the label for "trolley" in the 1990 and 2000 PRCS samples. "Carro público" was used as the label for "trolley" in the 2016-on PRCS samples. Note that "público" and "carro público" should be considered comparable with "Streetcar or trolley car" (or "Light rail, streetcar, or trolley" in 2019).

Also note that the values with the label "long-distance train or commuter train" were formerly labeled "railroad" in 2018 and prior samples.

Editing Procedure

TRANWORK and RIDERS (Means of transportation to work and Vehicle occupancy)
ACS Years: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015
ACS editing procedure:
For any person who reported having zero riders in their means on transportation (RIDERS), it was replaced with a missing value.
For any person who is not a worker (EMPSTAT), the means of transportation to work value (TRANWORK) and vehicle occupancy (RIDERS) will be replaced with a missing value.
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and TRANWORK is "Blank, Don't Know, Refused or Bad Value" but they report having between 1 and 99 people in the vehicle (RIDERS), TRANWORK will be replaced with "Car, truck, or van." When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QTRANWOR).
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and both TRANWORK and RIDERS are "Blank, Don't Know, Refused or Bad Value", TRANWORK will be allocated. The allocated value will be drawn from another person with the same race (RACE), sex (SEX), and metropolitan status (METRO). In 2006 and later, it will be based on RACE, METRO, and VEHICLES. When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QTRANWOR).
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and means of transportation to work is a "Bus or trolley bus", RIDERS will be made "Not in Universe". When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QRIDERS).
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and RIDERS is greater than 16, it will be replaced with 16. When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QRIDERS).
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and TRANWORK is "Car, truck, or van" and the value of RIDERS is "blank, don't know, refused, or bad value", RIDERS will be allocated. The allocated value will be drawn from another person with the same race (RACE), sex (SEX), and metropolitan status (METRO). In 2006 and later, it will be based on RACE, HISPAN, SEX, and VEHICLES. When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QRIDERS).
