Description

RIDERS reports how many people (including the respondent) usually rode to work in the vehicle that the respondent took to work during the previous week. This excludes persons who drove or rode in the same vehicle to school, or who returned home after dropping off workers, or who rode to any other non-work location. A worker who rode to work with one or more other people, but who was the only worker in the vehicle, was counted as driving alone.

Users should see TRANWORK for clarification of the universe statement (persons age 16+ who worked last week and used a private auto, truck, or van as their primary means of transportation to work).

Comparability

This variable means the same thing in all years, but the degree of detail varies. Each year separately identified cases with one to four riders. The 2000 census combined five and six riders into a single category. The 1980 and 2000 censuses collected information on up to "7+" riders, while the 1990 census, the ACS, and the PRCS used "10+" riders as the Top code. The original ACS samples provided separate codes for "8" and "9" riders, but the IPUMS combines these values in the 1990 code for "7 to 9" riders.

Editing Procedure

TRANWORK and RIDERS (Means of transportation to work and Vehicle occupancy)
ACS Years: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015
ACS editing procedure:
For any person who reported having zero riders in their means on transportation (RIDERS), it was replaced with a missing value.
For any person who is not a worker (EMPSTAT), the means of transportation to work value (TRANWORK) and vehicle occupancy (RIDERS) will be replaced with a missing value.
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and TRANWORK is "Blank, Don't Know, Refused or Bad Value" but they report having between 1 and 99 people in the vehicle (RIDERS), TRANWORK will be replaced with "Car, truck, or van." When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QTRANWOR).
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and both TRANWORK and RIDERS are "Blank, Don't Know, Refused or Bad Value", TRANWORK will be allocated. The allocated value will be drawn from another person with the same race (RACE), sex (SEX), and metropolitan status (METRO). In 2006 and later, it will be based on RACE, METRO, and VEHICLES. When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QTRANWOR).
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and means of transportation to work is a "Bus or trolley bus", RIDERS will be made "Not in Universe". When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QRIDERS).
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and RIDERS is greater than 16, it will be replaced with 16. When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QRIDERS).
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and TRANWORK is "Car, truck, or van" and the value of RIDERS is "blank, don't know, refused, or bad value", RIDERS will be allocated. The allocated value will be drawn from another person with the same race (RACE), sex (SEX), and metropolitan status (METRO). In 2006 and later, it will be based on RACE, HISPAN, SEX, and VEHICLES. When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QRIDERS).
