Description

MIGSEA1 identifies the State Economic Area (SEA) where the sample-line person lived 1 year prior to being enumerated in the 1950 census. State Economic Areas are single counties or groups of contiguous counties within the same state that had similar economic characteristics. (See SEA for further details.) SEAs with fewer than 100,000 residents were combined to form SEAs exceeding 100,000 residents, to meet confidentiality requirements for the 1950 PUMS.

MIGSEA1 is a 3-digit numeric code identifying the State Economic Area (SEA) where the sample-line person lived 1 year prior to being enumerated in the 1950 census. MIGSEA1 specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).

Comparability

This variable is only available for 1950. State Economic Area of residence 5 years ago is available for sample-line persons in the 1940 sample, in MIGSEA5. For censuses other than 1950, migration data were collected using a 5-year reference point (for the 1940 and 1960-2000 censuses). The ACS uses a 1-year reference period for migration questions, but no geographic unit other than state is identified in the ACS samples.
