Description

MIGSEA5 identifies the State Economic Area (SEA) where the respondent lived 5 years ago (on April 1, 1935). State Economic Areas are single counties or groups of contiguous counties within the same state that had similar economic characteristics in 1950. (See SEA for further details.) SEAs with fewer than 100,000 residents were combined to form SEAs exceeding 100,000 residents to meet confidentiality requirements that were in effect at the time the 1940 PUMS was constructed.

MIGSEA5 is a 3-digit numeric code reporting the State Economic Area (SEA) where the respondent lived 5 years ago (on April 1, 1935). MIGSEA5 specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).

Comparability

This variable is only available for 1940. State Economic Area of residence 1 year ago is available for sample-line persons in the 1950 sample, in MIGSEA1.

For the post-1950 period, the Census Bureau designated other geographic entities to meet confidentiality rules (generally identifying only areas with at least 100,000+ residents). For 1970 and 1980, the geographic unit similar to SEA was the County Group; for 1990 and the 5-percent sample of the 2000 census, the geographic entity similar to SEA was the Public Use Microdata Area (PUMA). Information on place of residence 5 years ago based on these geographic units is available in MIGCOGRP for 1980, and in MIGPUMA for 1990 and the 5 percent sample of the 2000 census.
