Comparability
This variable means the same thing for all years, but the categories change.
Electric or central heat pumps (reverse cycle systems) are part of the "central warm air furnace" category for 1970. For 1980, they are explicitly excluded from this category and are placed in a separate category (they are not mentioned on the form in 1960). For comparability across years, users should combine "central warm air furnace" (code 30) and the built-in electric unit categories (codes 40 through 42).
The "other" category is less detailed in 1960 than in later years. In 1960, "all other" means of heating were divided between those with and without a flue. In 1970-1980, room heaters burning liquid fuel, with and without a flue, were identified, as was a separate category for "fireplace, coal/wood stove, or portable room heater." For comparability across years, users should combine all "other" categories (codes 61 through 65).
