Description
MDSTATUS indicates the metropolitan status of households based on the Metropolitan District classification. Metropolitan Districts are made up of large cities and the contiguous minor civil divisions that meet population density requirements (see METDIST). Metropolitan Districts are comprised of central cities, the urbanized fringe and the metropolitan fringe. Central cities are urban centers with populations of at least 50,000. The urbanized fringe is made up of places contiguous to the central cities that are either incorporated municipalities with populations of at least 2,500 or smaller incorporated places and unincorporated places that have population densities of at least 1,000 persons per square mile. The central cities and the urbanized fringe make up the urbanized area (see URBAREA). The metropolitan fringe is the remaining territory in the Metropolitan District that has a population density of at least 150 persons per square mile.
