Description
MOMNO reports the person-record number (see PERNUM) within the household of the person's apparent mother, as determined by the creators of the 1910 samples that were developed prior to the existence of the IPUMS (these include the national 0.4% 1910 sample and the 1910 Black oversample). These samples have since been integrated into the IPUMS as part of the "1910 1.4% sample with oversamples." The cases containing MOMNO are identified in the SAMP1910 variable, where they have values of 5 or 6.
If the person has no apparent mother in the household, that person is coded 0.
The 1910 sample linked children to mothers if either of two sets of conditions were met:
Case A: The child was listed as the child (or son or daughter) of the head on the census form, the woman was listed as the wife of the head or as the head, and if:
- there were no married boarders in the household,
- there were no other adult relation-to-head codes for the household, except mother or mother-in-law of the head,
- the age of the child was given, and the woman was 14 to 45 years older than the child,
- the child was single,
- the child had the same surname as the mother, and
- the oldest child in the set of children linked to the mother had an age less than the mother's duration of marriage plus two, and greater than the number of surviving children the woman reported.
- there were no married boarders present in the household,
- there were no other relatives of the head present in the household except child, son, daughter, or wife,
- the ages were given, and the woman was 14 to 45 years older than the child, and
- the mother reported at least one surviving child.
Links ("probability" and "hand" links) were made in some other cases, based on the above conditions and other factors listed in MOMLNKWT. For further information, see the MOMLNKWT and MOMLKREA variable descriptions.
This variable is only available for the 1910 1.4% sample with oversamples. MOMNO is a 2-digit numeric variable that reports the person-record number (see PERNUM) within the household of the person's apparent mother, as determined by the creators of the 1910 samples that were developed prior to the existence of the IPUMS (these include the national 0.4% 1910 sample and the 1910 Black oversample). These samples have since been integrated into the IPUMS as part of the "1910 1.4% sample with oversamples." The cases containing MOMNO are identified in the SAMP1910 variable, where they have values of 5 or 6. If the person has no apparent mother in the household, that person is coded "00." MOMNO specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
User Note: Other mother-child links ("probability" and "hand" links) were made in other cases based on the above and other factors listed in MOMLNKWT. For further information, see the MOMLNKWT and MOMLKREA variable descriptions.
MOMNO Specific Variable Codes
00 = No linked mother or not in universe.
Comparability
This variable is only available for the 1910 1.4% sample with oversamples. MOMLOC, an IPUMS constructed variable, links mothers and children for all years.
Universe
- Cases in the 1910 1.4% sample with oversamples having a SAMP1910 value of 5 or 6; not available for Puerto Rico.
