Description
PUMATY00 is an unrecoded variable that reports the types of places included in a household's Super-PUMA (1 percent data) or PUMA (5 percent data). PUMATY00 can be used to determine whether the household is in a central city, in a metropolitan area outside a central city, or in a non-metropolitan area. Other characteristics of the Super-PUMA areas can be gleaned from the variable as well.
Three dimensions of variation are encompassed in PUMATY00: (1) The PUMA/Super-PUMA may or may not include part of a "metropolitan area" (see METAREA); (2) If it does contain some part of a metropolitan area, there may or may not be some "central city" area within the PUMA/Super-PUMA (see METRO); and (3) If it does contain some part of a metropolitan area, the PUMA/Super-PUMA may or may not be entirely comprised of territory that is part of that specific metropolitan area (see below).
A metropolitan area is "fully-identified" if the entire metropolitan area and no other territory is contained in one or more Super-PUMAs (1 percent data) or one or more PUMAs (5 percent data). A metropolitan area is "partially-identified" if there is other territory encompassed in any of these Super-PUMAs or PUMAs.
Note that there are several abbreviations for types of metropolitan areas: MA (metropolitan area), MSA (metropolitan statistical area), CMSA (consolidated metropolitan statistical area), and PMSA (primary metropolitan statistical area). See METAREA for details. For more definitions of terminology, see PUMA, PUMASUPR, METAREA, and METRO.
