WIFENO
Wife number, alternate 1910 linking variable

Description

WIFENO reports the person-record number (see PERNUM) within the household of the man's apparent wife, as determined by the creators of the 1910 samples that were developed prior to the existence of the IPUMS (these include the national 0.4% 1910 sample and the 1910 Black oversample). These samples have since been integrated into the IPUMS as part of the "1910 1.4% sample with oversamples." The cases containing WIFENO are identified in the SAMP1910 variable, where they have values of 5 or 6.

If the man has no apparent wife in the household, he is coded "0." (All women are coded "0").

The 1910 sample linked men to wives if the census form indicated that all of the following conditions were met within the household:

  • the man was the household head and the woman was the wife of the head,
  • there were no persons in the household who were unrelated to the head except unmarried boarders,
  • no more than one person in the household was coded as wife,
  • no more than two people in the household were married (person age 13+ with "blank" marital status were treated as married for this purpose),
  • the man and woman had the same surname,
  • they both reported that they were married,
  • they both reported that they had been married the same number of years, and
  • they both were age 15+.

Other husband-wife links ("probability" and "hand" links) were made in other cases based on the above and other factors listed in WIFLNKWT. For further information see WIFLNKWT and WIFLKREA.

Codes

This variable is only available for the 1910 1.4% sample with oversamples. WIFENO is a 2-digit numeric variable that reports the person-record number (see PERNUM) within the household of the man's apparent wife, as determined by the creators of the 1910 samples that were developed prior to the existence of the IPUMS (these include the national 0.4% 1910 sample and the 1910 Black oversample). These samples have since been integrated into the IPUMS as part of the "1910 1.4% sample with oversamples." The cases containing WIFENO are identified in the SAMP1910 variable, where they have values of 5 or 6. If the man has no apparent wife in the household, he is coded "00." (All women are coded "00"). WIFENO specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).

User Note: Other husband-wife links ("probability" and "hand" links) were made in other cases based on the above and other factors listed in WIFLNKWT. For further information see WIFLNKWT and WIFLKREA.

WIFENO Specific Variable Codes
00 = No wife linked or not in universe.

Comparability

This variable is only available for the 1910 1.4% sample with oversamples. SPLOC, an IPUMS constructed variable, links husbands and wives for all samples in the IPUMS.

Universe

  • Cases in the 1910 1.4% sample with oversamples having a SAMP1910 value of 5 or 6; not available for Puerto Rico.
