Description

URBTYPE reports whether the housing unit was located in an "urbanized area," that is, in a concentration of at least 50,000 inhabitants consisting of a central city and the surrounding, closely-settled contiguous urban fringe. Urbanized areas have a population density of at least 1,000 persons per square mile, though small pockets of land within them (such as industrial parks or railroad yards) may be less densely settled. For housing units within an urbanized area, URBTYPE distinguishes between dwellings in the central city itself and those in the surrounding "urban fringe."

For households outside urbanized areas, URBTYPE distinguishes between those in "urban" settings of 2,500+ inhabitants and those in "rural" locations (including small towns with less than 2,500 inhabitants).
