Description

NSPANISH is a neighborhood characteristic which reports the ratio of the persons of Spanish heritage to the total population for the neighborhood (persons of Spanish heritage / total population). The ratio ranges from .00 to .99 (decimal implied) with values rounded to the nearest decimal place.

"Spanish heritage" was defined differently in three areas of the country. In New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania it includes persons of Puerto Rican birth parentage; in Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California it includes persons who reported Spanish language and/or had a Spanish surname; in all other States, it includes persons who reported Spanish language.

This variable is only available for the 1970 Neighborhood Samples (U.S. and Puerto Rico). NSPANISH is a 2-digit numeric variable which reports the ratio of the persons of Spanish heritage to the total population for the neighborhood (persons of Spanish heritage / total population). The ratio ranges from .00 to .99 (two decimals implied) with values rounded to the nearest decimal place. NSPANISH specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).
