Description

HRSWORK2, like HRSWORK1, reports the total number of hours the respondent was at work during the previous week. It differs from HRSWORK1 in that responses are given in intervals (1-14 hours, 15-29 hours, and so on), instead of as a precise number of hours. This is because the 1960 and 1970 samples recorded hours worked last week only in intervals. For the other years contained in HRSWORK2 (1940, 1950, 1980, 1990), the exact number of hours worked is recorded in HRSWORK1.

Comparability

This variable means essentially the same thing across years. Because the census was taken at different times of year, the reference week ("last week") varied from census to census and, in later years, within censuses, since respondents did not all complete their census forms during the same week. See HRSWORK1 for further discussion.

  • 1940: Persons age 14+, at work last week, not at emergency government work.
  • 1950: Persons age 14+, at work last week; not available in Alaska.
  • 1960-1970: Persons age 14+, at work last week.
  • 1980-1990: Persons age 16+, at work last week.
