Description
VETCHILD indicates whether a sample-line child's father was a veteran (living or dead). As with the other veteran variables, only past active duty in the main branches of the U.S. military (e.g., the Army, Navy, or Marines) counted toward veteran status. Service in the National Guard, the Reserves (Army, Navy, or Marine), Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Citizens Military Training Camp, Merchant Marine, or other branch not a part of the regular military establishment was not included, unless the father was called up for active duty. Fathers currently in the armed forces were not considered veterans.
See VETSTAT for more information on the types of service included or excluded from the veteran variables.
