Weight of mother link, alternate 1910 linking variable

Description

MOMLNKWT reports the assigned weight of potential 1910 mother-child links, as determined by the creators of the 1910 samples that were developed prior to the existence of the IPUMS (these include the national 0.4% 1910 sample and the 1910 Black oversample). These samples have since been integrated into the IPUMS as part of the "1910 1.4% sample with oversamples." The cases containing MOMLNKWT are identified in the SAMP1910 variable, where they have values of 5 or 6.

The MOMLNKWT values range from 99 to -100. The highest values represent links made with the most confidence (when the woman is almost certainly the child's mother). The lowest values represent links rejected with the most confidence (when the woman is almost certainly not the child's mother). A value of -100 indicates that the probability-linking program tried to link a potential child to itself, and no other potential link could be tried in that household.

The weight, which is a statistical measure of probable accuracy, is affected by the following factors: relationship to head; surname; position in household listing; age difference between woman and child; race; woman's number of children surviving; marital status; woman's years married minus child's age; woman's number of times married; place of birth of woman and of child's mother; and woman's mother tongue and child's mother's mother tongue.
