Description

ACTIVITY describes the respondent's main activity during the previous week as either working (for profit, pay, or as an unpaid family worker), serving in the armed forces, housekeeping, or something else (e.g., attending school). It also identifies those unable to work during the previous week due to a long term illness or disability. Being elderly did not constitute sufficient grounds for being "unable to work;" only persons with a physical or mental disability lasting 6 months or more counted as "unable to work." Additionally, only persons who reported their main activity as "housekeeping" or "something else" were further asked if they had worked at least one hour for pay or profit or had looked for work.

Comparability

This variable is only available for 1950.

For an alternative classification of the information provided in this variable, consult EMPSTAT. When comparing the classifications of EMPSTAT and ACTIVITY, a person who worked for pay for at least one hour during the preceding week would be classified as "working" in EMPSTAT but might be reported as "keeping house" or doing "something else" in ACTIVITY.
