Description
BATHRMS reports the number of complete and partial bathrooms within the housing unit. Under the 1960 definition, a "complete" bathroom had both a flush toilet and a bathtub or shower. The 1970-1990 definition required a wash basin with piped water as well. In all four years, a "half" bath had at least a flush toilet or bathing facilities.
In 1960, not all households received this question, and only 80 percent of cases in the IPUMS include the question. Such cases accurately represent proportional distributions but not correct absolute numbers for the total population. See SAMP1960 for instructions on making appropriate corrections to derive absolute numbers for the total population.

Comparability
Comparability is affected by the aforementioned difference in how the census defined "complete" bathroom between the 1960 and 1970-1990 samples. Additionally, there are some coding differences between census years and samples. In the 1970 U.S. census, more detail is retained for those housing units with more than 2+ bathrooms (see codes, "7," "8," and "9"). Codes "7," "8," and "9" can be combined in the 1970 sample for comparison with code "6" in the other samples. In the 1980 and 1990 Puerto Rico samples, more detail is retained for those housing units with either no baths (code "2") or those with only a half bath (code "3"). Codes "2" and "3" can be combined in the 1980 and 1990 Puerto Rican samples for comparison with the U.S. census samples 1960-1980 code "1."
