Description
CNTYSTR provides the original unedited census entry for county of residence.
For the 1940 1% sample, STDCNTY also contains string entries for county. It differs from CNTYSTR in that the strings have been cleaned and standardized for consistency.
This variable is only available in the 1940 1% file. CNTYSTR is a 30-character alphabetic string variable which reports the respondent's original unedited entry for county of residence. STDCNTY also contains alphabetic string entries for county, however it differs from CNTYSTR in that STDCNTY alphabetic strings have been cleaned and standardized for consistency. CNTYSTR specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
