Description
DEAF identifies persons who were both "deaf and dumb," the contemporary terminology for persons with severe hearing or speech disabilities.

In 1850-1870, persons who were only deaf or only dumb were also identified; in 1880 and 1910, such persons were not identified. For some cases in 1880, additional information regarding the nature of the person's condition is available in the SICKNESS variable.
