Description
DEDUCTS indicates whether respondents with income reported in INCWAGE had Federal Old Age Insurance or Railroad Retirement funds deducted from their pay. In 1939, Federal Old Age Insurance deductions were taken from the first $3000 earned in wages/salary by private-sector employees, except among those engaged in agriculture, sailing, domestic service, and unpaid family work, or working for railroads or nonprofit organizations. Railroad Retirement deductions were taken from the first $300 earned each month by workers in the railroad industry.
If either of these deductions were made, respondents were to indicate whether such deductions were made from all, more than half, or less than half of their wages/salary.
