Description

The modified schedule used to enumerate American Indians in 1910 contained a field labeled "Graduated from what educational institution." Enumerators were instructed to determine whether "the Indian is a graduate of any educational institution," and to "give the name and location of such institution." EDATTEND identifies respondents who indicated that they had graduated from an educational institution.

In practice, enumerators gave a broad range of educational institutions, including grammar, public, and mission schools, as well as colleges and universities. Many of the responses were somewhat vague regarding the level of education (e.g., the descriptive term "academy" does not typically clarify the level of education). Thus, this version of EDATTEND does not attempt to measure the level of education.
