FUELCOOK reports the primary fuel used for cooking. Respondents who had no cooking equipment and did not eat meals at home were to respond: "no fuel used."

Comparability
Comparability across years and samples is affected by changes in the response categories. The 1970 and 1980 U.S. census samples and the 1980 PR sample are completely comparable. The 1970 PR sample identifies "charcoal" (code "8") as a cooking fuel instead of "coal or coke" (code "7"), which is the relatively comparable fuel identified in the 1970 U.S. sample and the 1980 samples. In the 1990 PR sample, the response categories changed more substantially. Only electricity and gas (not specified) were directly identified and the residual category "other" (code "10) subsumed all other types of previously identified cooking fuels (kerosene, liquid fuels, wood, charcoal, etc.), along with those originally identified as "other" in the earlier samples.
