Comparability
This variable is available for the 1980 and 1990 Puerto Rican censuses, but the question differs between 1980 and 1990. The 1980 survey asks the type of energy used by the water heater and the survey instructions indicate that respondents should select "no tank type water heater" if the only water heater in the housing unit is a shower heater. The 1990 Puerto Rican census includes a separate category for "shower heater" and the survey asks the type of water heater used in the housing unit, as opposed to the type of energy used by the water heater in 1980.
Users may also want to consult the related variable, HOTWATER, which indicates whether or not hot and/or cold piped water was available to the occupants of the housing unit. HOTWATER is available for the 1960-1970 U.S. censuses and the 1970-1990 Puerto Rican censuses.
Universe
- Occupied unit, not group quarters; available for Puerto Rico only.
