HOTWATER indicates whether hot and/or cold piped water was available to the occupants of the housing unit.

Comparability
Though the categories available (no piped water, cold piped water only, hot and cold piped water) are the same in the samples for 1960, 1970, and the 1980 and 1990 Puerto Rican samples, the questionnaire wording changed. The 1960 form included the choice "Running water on the property but not inside the building," while the 1970 forms and the 1980 and 1990 Puerto Rican forms only referred to "piped water in this building" (emphasis added). Housing units with piped water only outside the building might have been coded as 2 (cold piped water only) in 1960 and as 1 (no piped water) in the 1970-1990 samples. "Piped water" remained the terminology until 2008, when it reverted to "running water."
The closest equivalent to HOTWATER in the 1980 and 1990 censuses is PLUMBING (which also appears from 1960-1970, in the 2000 samples, the 2000-2007 ACS, and the 2005-2007 PRCS; PLUMBING is not available for the 1980 or 1990 Puerto Rican censuses). PLUMBING reports access to running water, a flush toilet, and a bathtub and/or shower. Users may also want to consult the related variable, HOTWTRPR, which indicates the type of water heater (i.e., electric, shower, solar) in the housing unit and is available for the 1980-1990 Puerto Rican censuses.
