Description

The modified schedule used to enumerate Indians contained a field labeled "Other name, if any." Enumerators were instructed to "Write the Indian name, if the person has one, in addition to the English name given in column 3. If the Indian only has one name, Indian or English, repeat the name in this column."

INAME is a 35-character alphabetic string variable which reports the "Indian name" of the respondent if any. INAME is only available for American Indians enumerated in the 1900 census for which enumerators were instructed to: "Write the Indian name, if the person has one, in addition to the English name given in column 3. If the Indian only has one name, Indian or English, repeat the name in this column." INAME specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
