INCNONWG
Had non-wage/salary income over $50

Description

INCNONWG indicates whether the respondent had an income of more than $50 from sources other than wages and salary in 1939. The 1940 census collected detailed information on only wage and salary income (see INCWAGE). INCNONWG provides the only additional information on income for that year; total income was not reported.

The 1940 enumerator instructions listed business profits, professional fees, rent collected, interest, dividends, unemployment compensation, government and private relief, pensions, annuities, royalties, and all payments-in-kind, including the consumption of one's own farm products, as non-wage, non-salary income. Lump-sum insurance settlements, lump-sum compensation payments, occasional gifts, inheritances, and reimbursements for business expenses were excluded. Capital gains were also excluded, unless the respondent made a living by buying and selling real property or securities.
