Description

INCSTR provides the alphabetic string for incorporated municipalities (e.g., cities and villages).

A separate variable, INCORP, assigns numeric codes to incorporated municipalities. INCORP relies on a historically modified version of the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) naming scheme.

INCSTR generally must be used in combination with one of the state variables (STATEICP or STATEFIP) and the COUNTYICP variable.

For the 1940 1% sample, STDCITY also contains string entries for incorporated municipalities. For most users, STDCITY is likely to be more useful than INCSTR because the strings have been cleaned and standardized for consistency.

This variable is only available in the 1880 10%, the 1880 100%, the 1900 5% and the 1940 1% files. INCSTR is a 30-character alphabetic string variable that reports the alphabetic string for incorporated municipalities (e.g., cities and village). The constructed numerical version, INCORP, is available in all 1850-1930 samples, except for the 1850, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 100% files or the 1940 1% file. INCSTR specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).

Comparability

INCSTR is available only in the 1880 10%, the 1880 100%, the 1900 5% and the 1940 1% files. INCORP, the numerically coded version of INCSTR, is available in all 1850-1930 samples, except for the 1850, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 100% files or the 1940 1% file.
