Description

LINE reports the census-form line number of the randomly selected sample point that identifies the case. LINE can be used in conjunction with other variables to locate the case on a microfilmed version of the original census form (see REEL). See "Sample Designs" for information on the meaning of sample point for each sample.

On the forms for 1850-1880, the original line numbers repeat on each back of the page. To identify the side of the page, the IPUMS renumbers the lines on the back of the page in these years. Specifically, the second page line numbers are 43-84 in 1850, 1860, and 1870 and are 51-100 in 1880. In 1860 and 1870, line numbers 101-199 refer to lines on the second page of identically numbered pages, or to lines on an unnumbered page.
