Description

MCIT5STR is the original string entry for the city where the respondent lived 5 years ago. Most users will want to use coded migration variables such as MIGCITY5 and MIGMET5. In the 1940 1% sample, users should be aware that the coded migration variables contain place information only for records that met the Census Bureau's confidentiality requirements when the 1940 PUMS was constructed. MCIT5STR, however, contains county information for all records that had an entry in the original data, which is about 1% more cases than MIGCITY5 identifies.

Codes

This variable is only available in the 1940 1% file. MCIT5STR is a 30-character alphabetic string variable which reports the city where respondent lived 5 years ago. It is used to construct the numeric variables MIGCITY5 and MIGMET5. MCIT5STR specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
