Description
The modified schedule used to enumerate American Indians contained a field labeled "Tribe of Mother of this Indian." Enumerators were instructed to "...secure the name of the tribe with which the person is connected..." MTRIBE provides the tribal affiliation of the respondent's mother. Father's tribal affiliation is available in FTRIBE.
The first two digits of MTRIBE represent a general code, with the last tree digits providing a detailed code. TRIBE provides tribe information for the individual.
