Description

NAMEFRST is an alphabetic variable reporting the person's first name, as recorded by the enumerator on the census form.

Middle initials and middle names follow the first name, if the enumerator recorded them. A question mark embedded in a name indicates an illegible character. A question mark and space preceding a name means that the entry was difficult to read, and the name is the best interpretation possible. An exclamation point indicates that the entire entry was illegible. An asterisk indicates that the field was blank.

This variable is fully comparable across years (See also NAMELAST).

User Note: Due to contractual agreements with the data providers, NAMEFRST and NAMELAST are not available in the IPUMS 1850, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, or 1940 100% files. Users needing name information for academic research should apply for access via the North Atlantic Population Project.
