New England population in minor civil division

Description

NENGPOP gives the population in hundreds for minor civil divisions in New England, including towns and independent cities. For New England towns with incorporated municipalities, NENGPOP will be larger than the population reported in CITYPOP. Using NENGPOP, users can construct a definition of "urban" compatible with the published reports of censuses prior to 1930 (See URBAN for further discussion of how the Census Bureau applied differing definitions of "urban" to New England towns in census years before 1930).

Codes

NENGPOP is a 5-digit numeric variable that reports the population, in hundreds, for minor civil divisions in New England, including towns and independent cities. For instance, a minor civil division having a population of 1,234,500 will have a NENGPOP value of 12345. For New England towns with incorporated municipalities, NENGPOP will be larger than the population reported in CITYPOP. Using NENGPOP, users can construct a definition of "urban" compatible with the published reports of censuses prior to 1930 (See URBAN for further discussion of how the Census Bureau applied differing definitions of "urban" to New England towns in census years before 1930). NENGPOP specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
