Description
PUMAMINI identifies the mini-PUMA where the housing unit was located. "Mini-PUMAs" are geographic areas that were custom-defined by IPUMS for the 1960 5% sample. Each mini-PUMAs corresponds exactly to a set of 1960 counties and census tracts. They have at least 50,000 residents each, and they nest within PUMAs (Public Use Microdata Areas).
The mini-PUMA matches its containing PUMA exactly if the PUMA has less than 100,000 residents. Where a PUMA has a population greater than 100,000, mini-PUMAs subdivide the PUMA into smaller areas.
See the geographic resource page for 1960 PUMAs and mini-PUMAs for a complete explanation as well as relationship files and boundary files.
PUMAMINI is a 7-digit numeric variable identifying the Public Use Microdata Area (PUMA) where the housing unit was located. The geographic resource page for 1960 PUMAs and mini-PUMAs includes a relationship file identifying the component counties and census tracts corresponding to each mini-PUMA code as well as a boundary file that can be used to map mini-PUMAs and compare them with other areas.
